REDBOOT Corrective Foal Boot

Corrective Foal Boot for use in all fetlocks to correct limbs of foals born with different deformities. One size fits all.

The Corrective Foal Boot is designed to be used in all fetlocks for:
- Correction of Flexural Limb Deformities or contracted tendons
- Correction of Angular Limb Deformities or toe-in / toe-out conditions
- Prevention of acquired retraction due to pain-post-injury
- Permanent or temporary immobilization of the distal limb (for better management of fractures, tendon or ligament injuries and wounds)

For more corrective boots and braces, see the related items below.

Guidelines

Every year, thousands of foals are born with flexural or angular limb deformities or deviations at the carpus or fetlocks level – hindering them from reaching their optimal performance level later in life. The Corrective Boot is designed mainly to correct young foals’ problems. Therefore, the earlier you use them (days or weeks), the higher you expect results.
- The Foal boot is a ‘one size fits all’ for foals up to approximately 90 days based on the size and breed.
- It will fit most Thoroughbred, Polo & Quarter horse foals of average size up to over two months old.
- For regular size Warmblood foals, it can fit up to 1,5 months old.
- The limiting aspect regarding the size will be at the level of the fetlock articulation. Usually, the feet are not a problem. It will depend not only on the foal's size but also on the leg's condition (probably a swelling is in the way).
- You can remove the inner layers if you need that extra space, both of them at the time or just the front one or the back one. If you do this, then you have to compensate by using more bandaging inside. In some cases, you can trim the toe and gain more space inside the foot area.
- Foals can use two RedBoots or braces simultaneously with no problem and learn to stand up with them.
- Some bilateral conditions use only one boot or brace for 4-5 hours in one limb and then on the other one, and some cases will benefit immediately by using a boot in each limb simultaneously.

These are just guidelines, and each case is different, and the only experience will determine what's best.

The REDBOOT collection was developed by equine veterinarian Dr A. Almanza in Argentina. We work with professionals in the sector to carry the best products for our customers.

"We are pleased with the REDBOOT. They are superb for young foals with flexural deformities and very easy to use at events."

See how to apply a REDBOOT:

When applying an articulated REDBOOT brace to a foal with an angular limb deformity always keep the leg in a flexed position as observed in the video.

Once the boot is placed and tighten you can extend the full limb. Always bandage the limb before applying a REDBOOT...By doing this, you make the brace or boot fit anatomically.

Using the REDBOOT is simple. They are meant to be used by vets, horse care takers and owners. The foals get used to them quickly. Each case will be different. Start by using them for short periods of time and increase it gradually. You can mange a bilateral case with one brace by alternating its use on each leg at a time.

Some tips when using the REDBOOT's

Using the REDBOOTs is simple. They are meant to be used by vets, horse care takers and owners. The foals get used to them quickly. Each case will be different. Start by using them for short periods of time and increase it gradually. You can mange a bilateral case with one brace by alternating its use on each leg at a time.

- Foal can be sedated if necessary
- Foal can be laying down or standing up
- Present the open brace to the limb to asses amount of bandaging to be used
- Always bandage limb to make it fit
- Put more bandaging in the long bones ( Radius, cannon bone and pastern) and less around articulations (fetlocks and knees) as these structures are more sensitive to pressure
- Put the brace with the limb flexed
- First close lower part of brace and fast the velcro straps
- Close upper part of brace and fast the straps
- Extend the limb as much as you can and fasten rope into clamcleat
- Let the foal bear weight and walk around
- Make readjustments
- Leave the brace on for only a few hours at a time (3-5 hours) depending on each case
- Always use the REDBOOT's under the supervision of a veterinarian
